Letter from Japan: At Concert, Tokyo Comes Together To Mourn and Pray

March 20, 2011, Tokyo: As you know, a massive tsunami unleashed by Japan's biggest recorded earthquake slammed into the nation’s eastern coast on March 11, killing thousands of people.

The death toll has reached 8,134, and the numbers of missing people topped 10,000. It is a record high for an incident in Japan since the end of World War II in 1945. Around 390,000 people are still staying at 2,100 shelters.

The Japanese people are badly shaken up by the earthquake. All around our nation the Japanese people are devastated by grief. It can be said that Japan is in the deepest trouble since World War II.

Various programs are being cancelled throughout the nation, including concerts, performing arts, exhibitions and sporting events. But, a memorial concert was held at Tokyo Opera City Concert Hall on March 20.

The event was the Tokyo Academy Chorus' 56th regular concert. The chorus of 92 people was accompanied by the Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra and conducted by famous conductor Kazuyoshi Akiyama. They played John Rutter's "Requiem"(1985) and Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Requiem"(1984). Both of them are beautiful chorus writings.

The concert started off slowly. It's a wonderful sound, the members of a large chorus raising their voices all at one time. Akiyama conducted the orchestra and chorus with elegance. All the musicians did full justice to themselves. It seemed that the audience was so moved by the music. The concert was very beautiful. The audience gave them a loud round of applause for their outstanding performance. It was a prayerful concert.

The concert was held to give residents of Japan "hope" and "light," as they work to reconstruct their severely damaged cities. The representative of the Tokyo Academy Chorus, Kiyoshi Hasegawa said, "We'd like to send our deep and abiding sympathy and prayers to the victims and their families."

This night, the city of Tokyo came together to mourn, to pray, and to send a signal of hope that Japan will rise from the chaos and destruction. In the midst of pain, uncertainty, destruction, this was wonderful representation of goodness and hope.

日本からの便り：心を１つにして死者を悼み、復興を祈った東京の演奏会

報道されているとおり3月11日、日本の歴史上最大の地震が引き起こした巨大な津波がこの国の東海岸を襲い、数千人の犠牲者を出した。

これまでに死者は8,134人にのぼり、行方不明者は１万人を超えたが、これは1945年に第二次世界大戦が終わって以来最大の数値だ。今もおよそ39万人が2,100カ所の避難所で暮らしている。

日本はこの地震被害にひどく動揺し、国をあげて悲しみに打ちひしがれている。これは、第二次世界大戦以来日本が見舞われた最大・最悪の苦境だと言ってよいだろう。

全国で、演奏会や舞台公演、展覧会、スポーツイベントを始めとして、さまざまな催しが中止になった。しかし、そのさなかの3月20日東京オペラシティ・コンサートホールで、ある追悼コンサートが催された。それは東京アカデミー合唱団の第56回定期演奏会で、高名な指揮者の秋山和慶氏の指揮のもとに92名の合唱団員が東京シティ・フィルハーモニック管弦楽団をバックに歌ったのだ。曲目は、ジョン・ラターの「レクイエム」（1985年）とアンドルー・ロイド・ウェッバーの「レクイエム」（1984年）。2曲とも実に美しい合唱曲だ。

演奏は緩やかなテンポの曲に始まり、やがて大人数の合唱団がここぞと声を張り上げると、それは実にすばらしい響きとなった。秋山氏のオーケストラと合唱の指揮ぶりはとても洗練されていたし、オーケストラもソリストも合唱も全員が自分たちの持ち前を十分に発揮した。2つのレクイエムに聴衆も大いに感動したようだった。本当に素晴らしい演奏だった。聴衆はこの見事な演奏に何度も大きな拍手を送った。祈りの気持ちが伝わってきた演奏会だった。

　この演奏会は、深刻な被害を被った町や村の復興作業に携わる震災地の人々に「希望」と「光」を与えるために催されたものだ。東京アカデミー合唱団の長谷川潔代表は「私たちは、犠牲になられた人々とそのご家族に心からのお悔やみと祈りをお伝えしたかったのです」と述べた。

　この夜、東京の街は心を一つにして死者を追悼し、１日も早く日本が混乱と破壊から立ち直るようにと祈った。この演奏会は、破壊の爪痕を目の前にし、精神的苦痛と将来への不安を抱えた人々に希望と癒しを与える素晴らしい機会だった。がんばれ、日本！
